Submarine Gromits

As part of Aardman’s 2018 Gromit Unleashed trail for The Grand Appeal, we were commissioned by the University of Bristol to design and build two interconnected, interactive Gromit sculptures to showcase their cutting-edge 5G research.

Starting with a standard Gromit shell, we created a submarine-themed design, integrating a camera and display system within a periscope and nautical porthole. The porthole camera detected nearby visitors and transmitted a live video stream to the other Gromit, allowing people at separate locations to interact in real time. One sculpture was installed at We The Curious, while the other was placed at M Shed, connecting audiences across the city.

The Gromit Unleashed trail raised approximately £2 million for Bristol Children's Hospital, attracting visitors from across the UK and beyond—who collectively spent around 34,000 days exploring the sculptures.

Today, these two interactive Gromits can be found at the University of Bristol’s Queen’s Building and College Green offices.
